Ukrainian Dortmund Player Fears For Friends On Front Line Ahead Of Charity Match

INTERNATIONAL: Ukrainian Youth League soccer player Alan Aussi on Monday (April 26, 2022) said he was excited to help his war-torn country through a charity match with Borussia Dortmund where he is currently playing as a guest player.

On Tuesday (April 26) Borussia Dortmund and Dynamo Kyiv will play a charity match at Dortmund Signal Iduna Park stadium with ticket proceeds going to Ukrainian refugees.

“It is very difficult for me to be concentrating on football, on the match, on the trainings, but I’m a professional. I will get out tomorrow to give my very best”, Aussi told journalists.

Before Aussi fled the war he played for Veres Rivne on loan from Dynamo Kyiv. Two months ago he came to Germany and joined Dortmund as a guest player.

“I am very grateful to the club, the city. (…) it is a very special moment for me to be able to get onto the pitch tomorrow in a Borussia Dortmund kit”, Aussi said.

While now safe in Germany and away from the war, Aussi says he maintains regular contact with people in Ukraine, many of whom are still going through very difficult situations, including some on the front lines.

"Two of my best friends are at the front line. I am rarely in touch with them, but I am trying to contact them every day to see if they are alive. It is really difficult for me and for the families of my friends because for them, every day could be the last.”
